Vogue1124Spring/Summer 2010

Michelle Obama has gotten a lot more women in shift dresses which not only show off the arms, but a waistline as well.  If you are looking for a feminine cardigan to cover up those arms, look no further than VOGUE 1124 made in wonderful sweater knits.

Big clothes are not what the warm season is all about.  On the opposite end of the spectrum is the BOHO CHIC look, translated as “throw it on and go.” For most of us the look is somewhere in between. One of the trends is not only mixing textures within an outfit, but moods within an outfit as well. It is perfectly fine to wear a ruffled blouse with a jeans jacket.  My current favorite jean jacket is VOGUE 1036 – love the sleeve detailing, small shoulder and the shaped fit. For a more feminine take, try the soft layers in semi-transparent fabrics worn one piece over another. If you love skirts, try the double layered skirt, VOGUE 1139 in soft semi-transparent layers.   Shorts, not too long and not too short are a must have this season, some of the best are made in leather. I have a great looking short pattern coming out in April, paired with a stunning vest, VOGUE 1184*.

Vogue1018Skirts are more popular than pants in warm weather, this season’s favorites are the ruched skirt VOGUE 1018 and the above the knee length straight skirt VOGUE 1045.  Any skirt and any pant looks great with my new wrap blouse, which can be made in a knit or a stretch woven VOGUE 1164 flattering on all figures. The shift dress is shorter this year, about 5 inches above the knee with simple style lines, VOGUE 1161* and MCCALLS 6028, both well styled.  For the daring, the strapless short shift is also shown, sometimes under a colorful topper coat, easy to make dolman sleeve VOGUE 1060; in one of the season’s fun prints. If you have no waist simply leave out the darts.  Have fun with Safari and military looks, shown in Khaki with red detailing.

Vogue1165-ArtThe feminine look is alive and well with corset style blouses VOGUE 1140, corset top dresses and corset looks under a loose shirt. For a great corset top, Vogue Fabrics sells Corset Pattern Kits with lace up the back. One must have item this season is the classy white shirt.  VOGUE 1165 has classy pin tuck detailing and an A-line shape, guaranteed to take off 10 pounds and is flattering on all figures.  This shirt looks great with jeans as well as a short straight skirt.  Skinny jeans are shown rolled up a few inches worn with good looking athletic shoes or sandals. Straight cut jeans are shown rolled up with a 6-inch cuff, worn with sandals. Great fitting jeans are elusive for a lot of women. You can have that great fitting jean, regardless of your body type, if you make your own from one of my patterns VOGUE 1034 or VOGUE 7608.

Warm weather brings color out again. This year you will see a lot of blues – swimming pool and cobalt blues as well as rich jade green.  Warm orange, bright yellow and red are used as major pieces, trim or accessories.  Warm weather would not be the same without the stark all white ensemble, but this season you will see black and white combos as well.

Fabric selection is huge this year, especially if you sew, since there is so much available.  Keep your eye out for florals, muted prints, ikats, digital images, 1-inch gingham checks, oversized polka dots and nautical stripes. When stripes are used the direction of the stripes is often mixed within the piece, such as in the puzzle T-shirt VOGUE 1109. So many of the beautiful prints make up well in a loose, tunic-style dress worn with pants or alone with sandals. Watch for VOGUE 1171*, released in April, has a beautiful cowl neck and dart detailing sewn on the outside.  This pattern is made up halter style or with sleeves.

Knits – what would we do without them? Upscale T-shirt looks abound, my favorite feminine T-shirt with forgiving fit, raglan sleeves and a beautiful cowl neck is  VOGUE 1085. Another great tunic is bias cut VOGUE 1101, with enough ease in the pattern to glide over any lumps or bumps. So, so slimming!

Details are where you can show off as a garment sewer. Details you will want to include are:  flounces, pleated sections, lace, tulle and organza edging, draped and ruched sections, necklines with bows,  small beaded sections, rivets and studs – even on T-shirts and ZIPPERS – still a fashion favorite.

Colorful necklaces are oversized or medium sized worn in multiples.  While ethnic stones can be found, the material of the moment is colored Lucite. Not only will you find this in necklaces but in wide cuff bracelets and bangles.  Watch for architectural shapes with any jewelry piece.  Colorful statement rings and watches are still happening, especially fun in warm weather.  If you wear glasses, check out some of the thick rimmed variety for the sexy librarian look.  If you have been wearing the same glasses for 10 years, take someone younger with you to update your look.  Chocolate diamonds, who would have guessed, but they are beautiful.

What would warm weather be without those strappy sandals? You will find them in high heels, wedges and flats, the higher heel often with a platform. Neutral mid height sandals have the added bonus of lengthening the leg.  You will also see short booties but they will be open and strapped. Large totes are soft and hang close to the body. Clutches are oversized and in bright colors.
