Did you know that the first Father’s Day celebration began in Spokane, Washington? A young girl, named Sonora Smart Dodd, thought of the idea in church while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909!
Sonora was raised only by her father,a farmer and Civil War Veteran, and she wanted to show him how special he was to her. Since her dad’s birthday was in June, Sonora chose to hold the first Father’s Day celebration on the 19th of June, 1910 (100 years ago!).
In 1926, a National Father’s Day Committee was formed in New York City. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day. In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be held on the third Sunday of June.
So, in honor of the 100th anniversary of this special day, Power Sewing will be Celebrating Dads during the entire month of June! Visit The Daily Thread for special contests, blog posts, WebTV Shows and more.
