Sewing Tip 62: Pre-Shrinking

Why bother with pre-shrinking–especially when you are excited about the fabric and you want to sew right now? If you don’t pre-shrink fabric, you must treat washable fabrics like delicates: no hot water, no dryer. Shrinkage under these conditions is minimal. Although manufacturers say to allow for less than one percent shrinkage, fabric often shrinks much more. This problem occurs because the material stretches when it is wrapped around the fabric bolt. To avoid unexpected shrinkage in a garment, the fabric must be relaxed before the pattern layout is made.
