So Who Is Our Top/Blouse Contest Winner?

So many fun, creative and simply gorgeous tops/blouses were submitted. Making the judging process very hard . “What a delight to create a garment from Today’s Fit patterns by Sandra. I chose 1443 because it was both challenging and conducive to a wide variety of creative elements. With Sandra as my muse, (and a bit of Koos Van Den Akker and Bobbi Bullard), I decided upon using blue/purple rayon batik and navy silk gauze. I selected view A with sleeves from view B.

My tunic has a body of batik complemented with silk gauze sleeves, center back and inside collar. I can’t resist touches of machine embroidery and employed them in complementary colors along the two back seams, center sleeves and decorative button holes. The embroidery is all in the mendhika style which continues even along the inside facing hem, accomplished with machine decorative stitching. Both front sides feature subtle navy bias ribbon swirls from shoulder to hem.

The inside is nicely finished with French seams on the body and sleeves, plus flat felled seams along the shoulders. The silk sleeves are roll hemmed on the serger, which was perfect for this unstable and ravel prone fabric. The embroidery button holes are faux so that stitching does not show on the inside. The garment closes with covered snaps behind each button. Hemming rayon batik is tricky. I frequently use narrow Steam A Seam tape on knit hems, but might not have thought to do so on this hem until I read Sandra’s directions. Despite tedious pressing, the tape made accurate, hand stitched hemming a breeze.

My major challenge was to embellish the garment without changing the drape of these silky fabrics. Using the correct stabilizers for embroidery and creating evenly stitched embroidered button holes resulted in a tunic that will be comfortable and flattering. It fits wonderfully with few alterations needed… Thank you for that amazing experience and your inspiration!”-Janice P.

“I chose pattern #1452, I loved the angles along with the vertically placed gathers down the front of the top. The style lines of your pattern were nicely compatible with my geometric print. Your sizing was accurate making the pattern nice to work with. The difficulties I encountered were pretty much of my own doing since I decided to eliminate the slit in front and make it reversible. I cut an extra pattern piece for the smooth side and I really like the weight with 2 layers layers…..”-Susan B.

“Special Features: Bound button holes, with lips in the pants fabric color. Love the triangle shape you put in pattern. Separate button strip so I can wash blouse without buttons. All seams either “ French” or flat felled. Nothing shows inside, which was important in that light weight of a fabric. Double row top stitching on sleeve and back……” -Karen S.
