Once I figured out that since silk is a natural fiber and ought to be able to withstand water, I started to hand wash all of them. One caveat, the dyes almost always bleeds. Dharma Trading Company sells silk dye as well as a product called synthrapol that stops the bleeding. It's the best product I've found for this purpose.

This is wonderful. Please add more information about silks. Why wash them? Yes, this is an actual question. To save moneay at the dry cleaners? To cause them to have a different look or feel? Thanks.

Crepe de Chine and Silk Charmeuse can be hand-washed using 1 tablespoon of shampoo in a sink basin full of water for light colors. To prevent bleeding in dark colors, add 1 tablespoon of Epsom salts to the shampoo wash.

I use Forever New to hand wash(in the machine)silks and fine fabrics. I think it is as mild as plain shampoo but a lot more expensive. I will try the shampoo when I have used all the Forever New I have.
I will also try the epsom salts as I had some bleeding of the black velour onto my finger nails!!!
