Hi Karen,
I also owned the 180 and the 830 towers above it in all ways. Just the screen itself is a delight. The stitch quality is much better then the 830. The embroidery is wonderful. I'm more of a fashion sewer also. I love the built i duel feed for things such as bias bindings and matching plaids.
The ability to sew larger designs; the speed of the machine. The larger bobbin and superior winding; the auto threader; the BSR; the quality stitch you can only get with a Bernina, makes this the best machine on the market, in my opinion.
It also comes with software that will let you load whatever format of design you want. You don't have to buy expensive software to convert your designs.
Hope this helps a bit. I do urge you to SHOP dealers. Make sure the dealer supports their product with classes or other help. I recognize this is a big purchase… shop carefully.
That said, my husband purchased mine from Roza at California Sewing and Vacuum and Sewing in San Jose. I highly recommend him.
